Why Men Fall for Women Who Look Like Their Mum?

In most cases, men will find themselves being attracted to women who have the same features as their mothers. Researchers from Finland did a study on 70 men and women to compare the faces of their spouses with the parent of the opposite sex. The results were conclusive on the fact that most men are attracted to women who have the same features as their mothers. Studies reveal that this is natural as evolution has programmed our bodies to seek out partners that come from species group that resemble our own.

Findings from the study

The closest and earliest contact that one has is with their parents especially the mother. Therefore, the mother becomes the template that the man will seek when they are looking for a partner. This notion is not true of women when they are seeking partners as they do not marry someone who resembles their father. Mothers are very present in the life of a child especially when they are young. However, the study showed that fathers do not leave the same imprint on their daughters no matter their presence in their lives.

One should be warned because the bond between the son and their mothers does not stop* at the looks. Looking at the idea of Sigmund Freud, where Oedipus complex plays a great role in the life of a child, the relationship between a mother and their son will have a great impact on how the man relates and connects with their partner.

One of the researchers in the study, Kimmel reported that the best foundation for a relationship is in cases where the man has a special bond with their mother. However, in cases where a man has a distant relationship with their mother, they are likely to seek out the same type of women in an unconscious way. The explanation given for this notion is that the man will be trying to fix the bond of mother and son that was broken when he was young but this does not work out.

William Pollack who is an expert on Health Alliance for men and women advised men who had failed romantic relationships with their partners to look for women who did not resemble their mothers. One should compare the relationship they have with their partners with the one they had with their mothers and in case it is similar and it is failing, then it is time to quit and seek for another partner.

A research that was done by St. Andrew’s University showed that people are attracted to the features that their parents had when they were born. This study was done by David Perret, one of the psychologists in the University and it was proven* in varied studies. David and his colleagues did an experiment to rate attractiveness when people are at different ages. The study found out that the women who were born to parents who were above 30 were not attracted to younger men as compared to women who were born to younger parents. The preference for the face of females was impacted by the age of their mother’s, in men and this was in relationships meant for long term.
The two explanations that are given by psychologists on why men are attracted to women who look like their mothers are:

Imprinting – When one is an infant, the first people that they trust is their parents. The man will trust the mother more because of the special bond that they form with them when they are still young. The man is likely to look for women who have the same features as their mother as they are likely to trust them. This explains why they are more inclined to choose mates who look like their mothers as they consider them to be mate worthy.

Exposure Effect – This can be explained by the fact that the more one is around a particular person, the more they are likely to like them. This is the reason why people develop crushes to work mates, schoolmates and apartment mates. When one is around a particular person for long, they are likely to get fond of them and prefer them to others. It has been proven* that most people respond positively to a stimulus that is familiar and parental traits and features present a familiar stimulus. This explains why men will choose mates who have familiar traits and features in the initial stages rather than those who have different traits.

Conclusion

Research has shown that most men get attracted to partners who have the same traits as their mother. This is because the first person that they learn to trust and get acquainted to is their mother. The study concludes that there is a special bond between the mothers and their children as the same was not true of the fathers and their daughters.
